Showing Tasks on the Dashboard

When working with the Projects section of a dashboard, it would be helpful to allow tasks to be included for reporting.  We have a very specific task structure, and would like the ability to filter on those tasks, and surface their data on the dashboards.

We are excited to see the dash boarding feature.  Thanks for putting it together.

Hi Josh,

We are glad that you liked the Dashboard feature and are already using it.

I would say that this can form a good idea. I will contact my product management team and check if this is something that is already in plans.

Thanks,
Aashnee

Hi Josh,

I can definitely see how tasks would be a useful addition.

But, I'd be a little hesitant to include tasks in the dashboard.  The issue is that the dashboard takes an approach of loading most of the relevant data into your web browser, so that it is is faster to update the table and charts when you make changes.  The addition of tasks would greatly increase the amount of data being loaded, decreasing performance substantially.

When you say that you "have a very specific task structure", I'm imagining that you use the same task structure repetitively on multiple projects and you'd like the dashboard to be able to function on the same task name across multiple projects.  Does that sound accurate?

This is definitely an enhancement we'd be interested in, but, the potential performance impact means it isn't a trivial change.  I'll make sure we look into this in the near future and come up with some approaches so that we can try to address it.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the color.

You are correct on your assumption about our task structure.  Each department has a different task structure, but for those departments who report against projects, we have a consistent set of tasks.

What I am excited about here is a reporting capability with dashboards that the current reporting environment does not provide.  The visualizations.

Ideally there would be a middle ground between dashboards, and the current set of reports (which are largely geared for exporting data to excel for further analysis).

I would really love the capability of creating custom reports that allow me to 'mash up' projects and tasks in a custom way.  Something akin to an SSRS reporting environment (i.e. allow me to write my own custom reports, rather than making me download data into excel, and then write reports from our end).

Anyway, kudos on the great work thus far on dash-boarding.  I look forward to seeing what we can do with it.
